RICARD KROEKER, PICTOU LANDING HEALTH CENTRE - RESEARCH

For this project I will be research about Pictou Landing Health Centre, which located in New Glasgow, Canada. This centre was designed by Richard Kroeker.

This centre was built as a mental health centre for adults and kids. Idea of mental health centre is related to my rehabilitation centre where mental health also can be improved. In this one building there are rooms which include rooms for employees, a meeting room, and also, clinics for doctors, dentists, and community heath workers (Kroeker).

I choose this building because the form of this building is similar to the form of the entrance building which I am planning to create as part of my overall design.

The building was constructed by members of the community, using local trees. (Kroeker). Architect for this building used local materials which making this project sustainable. As Kroeker in my project I will use local materials, such as local wood for main building: glass produced in local factories. Also, industrial cannabis, which will help us to achieve a minimal footprint.

Heating and cooling is provided using geothermal energy from a local decommissioned municipal well water system. This strategy, together with heat recovery ventilation, high levels of insulation, earth berm and mass heat storage have made the building operate at 43% higher energy efficiency than a conventional building of comparable size. (Kroeker). This building is designed to be energy efficient. just like my project will include this, including due to fact that the size of buildings will be smaller.

One of the important parts of building energy efficient buildings is insulation. In my project instead of using fibreglass, which is not very common building material in this region, I will use hemp fibre insulation. This material is highly eco friendly, it helps to reduce energy consumption and is even more environmentally friendly material than fibreglass.

  1. Reviewing your blog, currently you will not achieve a pass mark. This is not good enough! I gave you a clear list of what I expected to see on your blog by the end of Week 5 and you have not done what I requested. At the moment it is very unclear what you are going to do for this project, there is little in the way of engagement.

Yo9u also have not posted your Major Project Plan which you started in Week 3! This should have been on your blog a long time ago. I expect to see this on here before we meet for our tutorial in Week 6.

  2. Add to the last paragraph - what is the importance of your building being energy efficient - will this help with the cost of maintaining the centre, which can be passed onto the patients.

Really like the idea about industrial cannabis as a building material - say you are going to follow up with separate posts on each material - wood/glass/cannabis.
